I used to love Discover. Every time I have a question, their staff is knowledgeable and able to get me whatever I need. But when it comes to actually being there for the customer, they are not good at all. I have auto-pay set up. I decided to instead of paying whatever was due for that statement to pay in full. Set up the payment and on the same day, they took the auto pay amount out and shortly after they pulled out the FULL amount which included the auto pay amount and some additional that was not within that month's statement. I was later charged $27 by Discover (my first fee since 2012 by the way).I called to talk about it and they said it's human error. The problem I have is if I put in a request to pay the balance in full, howcome it can't subtract what is due? Howcome it doesn't run the higher payment and see if anything else is due to charge me the second time?? There are 101 ways around this nonsense. I guess Discover lets you overpay so they can bank on the extra amount you put in until your smart enough to realize you overpaid. First fee in 6 years, never once have I not paid the total due me.The customer service rep said it was my problem and they charge me because my bank charged them. Now do I think I'm being a little emotional about this? I am. It's not the $27 that irritates me. It's that 1. They don't have proper logic built into their apps and services to determine that is going to happen and warn the user and 2. They weren't willing to reduce the charge or make any effort to hang on to a customer that's been using them for years. That is true through use of the words "it's a user error" on the phone and through their lack of action.Let's say the fee to them was $20 from my bank and they charged an additional $7 to me as an inconvenience. Even if they had made a small adjustment like that, I could somewhat understand. But back to the lack of built in logic in the service. Totally irritates me.

Great credit card for first time!

I applied for this card to earn a sign-up bonus and extend my credit card range. My sign-up bonus was $50 after spending my first purchase as soon as I got one. I was able to meet the bonus requirements easily and enjoy having the bonus deposited in my cash back and then transferred to my checking account. I love that this card makes cash back so easy. I can spend the cash back on Amazon if I like or redeem it as checks or gift cards. It also makes it easy to earn cash back with set percentages and special 5% back categories every quarter. Another great perk is the FICO score every month which makes it easy to monitor my credit health. The points system is great because you don't have to activate anything or take any action - you just start racking up points as you spend. I put almost all my expenses on this card and pay it off each month in full, so I end up with lots of points! I would greatly recommend this card to everyone I know.

This is definitely a great card to start with, as they do seem to be fairly generous in approving those who are new to credit cards. The rewards are great, and occasionally they do throw in a few extra ways to earn a little bonus cash back aside from the quarterly 5% categories. They also forgive you for the first time you make a late payment, so this gives you a chance to learn how to use a credit card responsibly without being penalized for the first time you slip up.

If you later want to request a credit limit increase, you can easily do so online, and it might only require a soft pull. If they do require a hard pull, they will at least tell you and give you a chance to back out if you don't wish to proceed in that case.

One down side is definitely the acceptance rate. Discover is rarely accepted internationally, despite Discover boasting no foreign transaction fees.

How To Apply For A Credit Card

Credit card applications are straightforward, but you'll need to meet some minimum financial requirements to get approved for the best credit card offers. Learn how to apply for a credit online and what to expect after you click submit.

  • Knowing your credit score and what's on your credit report can help you determine what products to apply for. If you have fair credit, for example, you may not want to apply for a card that clearly states that only applicants with excellent credit will be approved.
  • If you don't have good credit, you may find it difficult to get approved for a card with a large sign-up bonus and a lucrative reward structure. Each credit card application ends up on your credit report, so the Nerds recommend using our credit cards comparison tool to find a card that fits your credit profile before applying.
  • If the card allows balance transfers, you may request to have balances transferred from other credit card accounts to the new card.
  • To apply for a credit card in the US, you’ll need a valid Social Security number and a positive credit history. The best rewards credit cards may require at least three to five years of good credit history, and some more than seven.
