After banking at Citizens Bank for years, I thought it made sense to open a credit card account through Citizens. I could not have been more wrong. The integration between Citizens banking and credit card services is ridiculously awful. The credit card services online portal is atrocious. It was impossible to register for an account online. I had to call the credit card services customer service number, which led to an endless cycle if automated menus. After finally configuring my account, I was unable to log into for OVER A YEAR without calling to have a representative unlock my account. (I'm a technologically competent millennial, and no, I didn't forget my password)."
A few weeks ago (early March 2017) I received a phone call reminding me to activate my new chip card. I told the representative that I'd never received a chip card. She then said it looked like mine actually hadn't gone out yet but that I should receive one soon. Today (March 31), I received a letter reminding me to activate this new chip card I've never received. I called the card services phone number, made it through a million rounds of menus, and got a hold of a reoresentative, who informed me that my card had been mailed in February but that they would reissue and resend another one. She asked if I wanted my new card delivered in 7-10 days for free or 2-3 days for a shipping fee of $23.99. I opted for the free choice, given that the letter I received today indicated that my old non-chip card would deactivate automatically May 1 or upon activating the new chip card. Seconds later, the representative tells me that she's cancelled the card that I have now and reassigned my account to a new number, essentially shutting down my account for 7-10 days while I wait for the chip card. Or you know, I could pay the $24.9 for Citizens to fix its mistake in a more timely manner.
Long story short: I'm moving my business to a local credit union.
Pro - actually earn rewards as you pay. Redeemable in $25 increments. One does not have to wait for the statement to drop to redeem rewards. Con - website is difficult to understand what's current and what is due at any given time. Online payments of less than $500 appear to post that day, over $500 takes a while. Redeemed rewards take a few days to post, too. Calculation of rewards was never quite clear. Checking the detail on earnings (takes you out to another site) didn't clear it up much. Customer service lacks empathy. Card can be suddenly be denied for no apparent reason, without notification or even a courtesy call. The security algorithms are apparently for their protection, not yours. Carry backup method or you'll be stuck in line. No way to get customer service via email or chat, must always call or write a letter."
I'm generally pleased with this new (2015+) MasterCard from Citizens Bank (the one headquartered in Rhode Island). It's a straightforward, no nonsense, mostly flat, cash rebate card fairly similar to Capital One's competing zero annual fee QuickSilver card. The rebate is a minimum of 1.5% but it's not too hard to do slightly better. You can manually request your rebate online as a statement credit once your rebate balance reaches at least $25. If you travel or otherwise make purchases overseas it's a particularly good card to have, although Citizens might not issue EMV chip-enabled cards until sometime in 2016 or even later. You'll still probably want to have a chip-enabled debit/ATM or credit card as a backup. MasterCard reportedly has slightly better foreign currency exchange rates than Visa, and that's also been my experience; Citizens charges no markup above the pure MasterCard network rate. (Be sure to decline any "dynamic currency conversion" merchant offers since they are ripoffs. Charge only in the original currency.) You have to telephone Citizens to let them know when and where you're traveling overseas since they don't offer online travel notification. You can set up "AutoPay" to help avoid late payment or interest charges by mailing a form and a voided check to Citizens. Although I prefer this particular MasterCard and its simple value, if you're looking for another MasterCard then the Barclaycard Arrival (no annual fee version) is probably the closest competitor."
